Fighting for Fair Utility Rates and a Clean Energy Future

WHY ARE DATA CENTERS FLOCKING TO GEORGIA? BECAUSE OF GEORGIA POWER

Two key reasons:

  1. Georgia Power controls the Public Service Commission; and
  2. Georgia Power controls the legislature.
  • As a result of weak PSC oversight and systemic corruption, Georgia Power provides data centers with rates that are 34% below the national average which few states can compete with.
  • As a result of a legislature in service to Georgia Power, Republicans passed House Bill 1291 exempting data centers from state or local sales taxes on computer servers, batteries, wiring, cabling, conduits, and also construction materials used to build and operate data centers such as generators, cooling towers, air handling units, and power distribution equipment. No state can compete with zero taxes.
  • In 2025 and 2026 Republican leaders had a chance to fix the data center problems they created but, declined. They failed to pass SB 410 to repeal the tax breaks, failed to pass SB 34 to protect ratepayers from data center costs, and failed to pass SB 94 to restore consumer protections they had stripped from the PSC.

In 2026 the Republican controlled legislature blocked 18 other bills filed by legislators seeking to control data centers: with few exceptions the votes were along party line with Republicans voting to protect Georgia Power and Democrats trying to pass legislation to control data centers and protect people.

THERE IS ONLY ONE SOLUTION AND THAT IS VOTE.

Democrats are trying to protect customers, but voters have to give them power.

CONTROL DATA CENTERS, EXPAND CLEAN ENERGY, AND LOWER POWER BILLS. START WITH THE PSC:

Shelia Edwards will flip the commission to Democratic control and be a crucial third vote.

Peter Hubbard is on the commission now but his efforts for greater transparency and lower costs are blocked by the Republican majority.
